DVD Review -
Peter Sanderson (Steve Martin) is an insurance lawyer with a
humdrum life who is divorced and has regular visits with his children.
After meeting a lawyer online, decides it’s time to meet. This meeting
is somehow not what he expected, and he ends up with an escaped convict,
Charlene, who wants her name cleared of all charges (Queen Latifah).
The ensemble cast is magnificent. You’ve got your uptight heiress
(Joan Plowright), a money hungry, sleep with any old guy to get it ex-sister-in-law
(Missy Pyle), an ex-wife (Jean Smart) who can’t decide if she still
loves Peter, an ignorant racist neighbour who is the sister of Peter’s
boss (Betty White), a co-worker (Eugene Levy) who’s madly in love
with Charlene, and kids Sarah & Georgey (Kimberly J. Brown & Angus
T. Jones) who have to regularly come to daddies defence.
Light-hearted clean comedy that has a bunch of interconnecting stories
and constant laughs. I forgot how Steve Martin is a master of his craft
and this is the best role I’ve seen him in, in a long time. I’ve
always been a fan of Queen Latifah ever since Set If Off (1996). She looks
fantastic in the movie and she’s all that. Betty White’s character
is great (Mrs. Kline). This is not a typical role for the “innocent”
characters she’s used to playing, and because of that, it works.
The extras on the DVD are worth watching. Gag reels (although not long
enough) are always my favourite. Queen Latifah who also Executive Produced
appreciates her crew and even thanked the Script Supervisor (we never
seem to get any credit) for a job well done. Also included are Queen’s
music video, deleted scenes and a segment on Eugene Levy (fellow Canadian
I’m proud to say). Rent this DVD!!
