I had heard a lot of buzz about this movie, and decided to give this one
a shot. I was glad I did. It starred Ice Cube as Calvin. Ice is a former
well known rap star. Who has been in some big name films. His most recent
(which was a bomb) was "Ghosts of Mars". But he did a good job
in this movie.
The premise is that Calvin, was left his father's barbershop when he passed
away about 2 years ago. This Barbershop was established by Calvin's grandfather
in 1958, and passed down, so it has a long history in the community and
the family. Well, Calvin is having a tough time making a go at the barbershop
business, due to the fact that his heart is not really in it. He's looking
for a get-rich-quick scheme, and wants to be out of the barbershop business.
When faced with missed payments, and failed loans from the bank, he turns
to a local "loan shark" and sells the business to him. The original
plan was that the loan shark would own the business but Calvin would continue
to run it as always. But as soon as the deal goes down, the loan shark
tells Calvin he's planning on turning it into a "gentlemans club"
with the name "The Barbershop". Well as the day progresses,
Calvin realizes he's made a mistake, and genuinely wants to save the barbershop.
Mixed into this storyline are a variety of off the wall characters. Two
small time thugs who steal an ATM machine. And the other barbers in the
shop; Ricky (a twice convicted felon, trying to get things right this
time), Terri an attractive hairdresser with a temper and attitude, Isaac
a white man born and raised in the projects, trying to fit into this African
American community, and Eddie played by "Cedric the Entertainer"
who is an aging barber with opinions on everything and not afraid to voice
them. Cedric's character was fantastic. Many funny lines, and situations,
and one-liners. Ice Cube, was believable and at times you really felt
the turmoil he was going through trying to keep his fathers barbershop
running the way it always has.
This movie was a bit rough around the edges in that it's not a typical
big budget film. But it had three things going for it... good actors/actresses,
a good story, and it was funny.
I would highly recomend this movie.
Interesting trivia: Issac Rosenberg
played by Troy Garity, is the son of Jane Fonda and Troy Hayden.
