A remake of the 1927 movie and also the musical. About a women
who is accused of killing her lover, who has aspirations of being on stage
and becoming famous. This is a movie about murder, greed, fame and being
infamous.
A Great satirical story and visually represented through the eyes of Roxie
Hart (Renee Zellweger) who wants to be on stage and famous more than anything
else in the world. The fact that she’s in jail waiting for her trial
because of murder, may be a great lead up to becoming famous…..or
infamous. She adores Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) who is already
a stage star but coincidentally also in jail for murder.
It shows how the justice system is ruled by entertainment and not the
facts and how the justice system or lawyer – Billy Flynn (Richard
Gere) can “string” along the media to control the story. Although
set in the 20’s, the same can apply to today’s justice system.
Well acted by all. They DID pull it off. I’m not generally into
musicals but because this also had a good story, and it is through the
eyes of someone who so desperately wants to be on stage, that it makes
sense. Great jobs by Mama (Queen Latifah) and Amos (John C. Reilly)….very
important roles for the story.
DVD – Extras. “The Making Of “and a
deleted musical duo with Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta-Jones (hard
to picture them as a duo, but they were great together).
