The brothers Russo offer an intended amusing little tale about a group of misfit thieves making a bid for the score of a lifetime, unfortunately they are beset by a profusion of errors each more hopeless and comedic than the one previous. Unfortunately it was neither amusing nor comedic, it was just plain boring. It's a shame when you go to see a film with a talented cast of characters, and nothing evolves from it. I truly wanted to like this movie, but I couldn't. I kept praying it was going to get better, but I guess I had set my expectations too high.
On the other hand I guess I should have seen it coming being that it was opening weekend, and there were only 20 people in the theater when the show began. It did however appear that at least 2 of those moviegoers found it quite hysterical judging by the laughter coming from their direction. So as long as they liked it I guess…
And just as a side-note to that, I have always found it quite disturbing when people laugh as soon as someone bad gets killed in the film. It's interesting that person would actually find amusement in seeing another human die, regardless of the circumstances. I could perhaps see a sense of satisfaction in that that person can no longer hurt anyone else, but humor? I don't get it…and besides it was just a movie so…oh well never mind…I'm getting off track.
Anyway, despite the talented cast with whom performances were commendable, this movie lacked any humorous value whatsoever. I laughed more during "STEALING HARVARD", and I sincerely detested that movie. : )
But now that I think about it "WELCOME TO COLLINWOOD" now does remind me of the film "CRACKERS" (1984) with Donald Sutherland, Jack Warren, Sean Penn, Wallace Shawn, Larry Riley, and the dearly departed Trinidad Salvia. Huh, a cast of five bumbling would be safecrackers (one with an infant in tow by the way) with a propensity for bad luck? Which movie am I talking about? Exactly. Once again the Infamous Hollywood Recycling Center spits out another remade gem. Now keeping this little tidbit in mind, would if I could, I'd give "WELCOME TO COLLINWOOD" a lesser rating if it were all possible. but alas, we haven't any rating worse than a red light. And add to that to the fact that I actually liked "CRACKERS" too, only makes the whole thing worse. Sorry...I'm done now...let me get off my soapbox...and you have a nice day. : D
