Okay what do you get from a director "David R. Ellis"
who has done mostly stunt related work through out his movie career? Hmmm…perhaps
a somewhat lame film with really cool stunts? You better believe it! Just
go rent any movie directed by "Hal Needham" if you don't. :
) On second thought, probably no…because most of those films should
be lost in obscurity where they belong…
I truly enjoyed the first "Final Destination". I thought it
imaginative, and original. It makes you really think about all those close
call or near misses you may have encountered in your life. Perhaps even
ask the question "If I had left five minutes earlier…that could
have been me in that accident ahead." Sorry, "What if..."
is one of my favorite queries. : ) Anyway…"Final Destination
2" is a pale comparison to the first. It tried in vain to be cleverer
in it's presentation, but failed. The premise of the first movie was essentially
"You can not cheat death", so what makes you think that anyone
in the second movie will do the same?
So why did I go see it? I have to be honest; I was hooked from the trailer
for the movie where they showed part of the accident, which the story
evolves. And no, I'm not an accident junkie. I don't watch "Nascar"
to see the crashes, for that matter I don't even watch "Nascar".
And when there is an accident on the road, I have the tendency not to
rubberneck, because that's how other crashes happen. I do on the other
hand have a passion for well-choreographed car stunts or chase scenes.
And this is why I was far from being disappointed in spending 8 bucks
to see the first 15 minutes of this film, because I knew that's all I
was going to get. And it was everything I hoped it to be. But afterwards
the film seemed nothing more than obscenely comical. I felt as if I were
watching a live-action "Looney Tune" cartoon, or as Jef put
it more succinctly, "Itchy & Scratchy". It was just so amusingly
stupid to see how these misfortunates met their final demise. And I apologize
to anyone in the theater who might have been offended by my muffled laughter,
but come on…it was just so obscure. Anyone who is a fan of the old
"Monty Python's Flying Circus" will know exactly what I mean.
But to some it all up…hmmm, I believe I already have. So if you
go…don't expect much.
