Ummm…okay…where to begin?
Okay, first things first, I need to publicly apologize to Jef for dragging
him practically kicking and screaming to see the flick.
So, with that out of the way...let's dig in...
"Sherman, set the Wayback Machine™ to the early 1980's…"
In my youth I got caught up in the phenomena of the so-called "Slasher"
film era. Not that this was the actual beginning of the before mentioned
era, but of something even more ominous…"The Slasher Film Endless
Sequel Era"!
I was hooked, and it all started with "Friday the 13th" in 1980,
then "Halloween" the same year. Then in the flurry of blood
and gore, enter "Nightmare on Elm St." in 1984. But, somewhere
around the 3rd or 4th installment of each film, my interest fell by the
wayside. I mean who really wants to see the same character succumb to
some well deserved demise only to be some how resurrected for the next
movie? Obviously a lot of people did, because 'Freddy' lasted for 10 years
with 7 movies to his credit, and 'Jason' ran for 21 years, and an impressive
10 films under his blood stained machete-wielding belt.
So, why go to this one if I had lost interest well before the 90's? I
guess my logic was simple in my desire to see this film..."Who's
gonna win?" But,
I must admit I was truly attracted by the concept itself. Kids growing
up have always come up with scenarios involving hypothetical match-ups
between heroes and /or villains, and who the eventually winner might be
and why. Now someone was going to put a title fight up on the big screen
for everyone to witness. Intrigued…I bought a ticket.
But, not being a kid anymore I was expecting something more involved than
just a rehash of the old tired clichés made infamous by the predecessors
of both films. And needless to say, I think I set my expectations a little
too high. But, what should one expect from the director of such cinematic
classics as "Bride of Chucky"? And the writing…well, Momma
always said "If you got nothing nice to say…"
But, then again if I did that then this would all be blank.
Oh yeah, and as for my desire to find out "Who won?". Well that
can be summed up better as my tagline stated, "Who Cares?" This
is simply a bad film, and is the reason why I stopped going to see them
in the past…they're worn-out and tragically ridiculous.
But with this all said and done and keeping mind that the film made over
37mill in its opening weekend, a follow-up film(s) are unfortunately and
dreadfully inevitable. Well, perhaps next time they'll juice up the card
a bit, throw 'Michael Myers' and 'Leatherface' in the opposing corner
and make it the "Pure Evil World Tag-Team Championship". Golly…I
can't wait.
