I have to admit I was drawn to this film by its similarities to “The Ring”. Not so much the story (because I didn’t know what it was going to be), but more by the cinematography. The overall creepiness of it, I mean just from the trailers I saw when those fingers come out of the back of ‘Sarah Michele Gellar’ head while she’s in the shower, it was enough to give you willies. Something was lost in the suspense of the film though; the parts where the spirits appeared and were meant to startle or scare you, were almost expected or anticipated. Creepy as they may have been, if you know it’s coming, then it’s not truly scary…is it? It’s not like it’s the “Daaaaa-dunt, Daaaaa-dunt” from “Jaws” wasn’t scary, you knew it was coming, although you may not have known what it was going to happen, most importantly you certainly knew there wasn’t anything anyone could do to stop it. The Terror. Terror is what is missing from this film. It had all the makings, it just never came through. Sure if you want to go and just have someone say “Boo!” then by all means, but it lacks the key ingredient of any well made horror movie…terror. Not as if it has to stack up to any other horror movie I’ve ever seen, but if it wants to be remembered… Lyn |
