When a presidential candidate unexpectedly dies, the Democrats want to choose a candidate that they know won’t win, so Senator Bill Arnot (James Rebhorn) can reclaim the presidency for 2008. Alderman Mays Gilliam (Chris Rock) is the lucky winner. Mays is not your average Alderman. He doesn’t where suits and he regularly mixes with the people. Mays travels across the country trying to win the people, with his staff, Martin Geller (Dylan Baker) and Debra Lassiter (Lynn Whitfield) by his side (sort of). Mays is competing against Brian Lewis (Nick Searcy). Mays is dealing with an ended relationship and one he wants to start. Mays hires his brother Mitch (Bernie Mac) as his Vice-President candidate.
You would think with this combination that the movie would be hilarious. I was so disappointed. The only couple of “chuckles” I may have had were from Bernie Mac and Nick Searcy. This was basically a presidential election and what leads up to it, which just like in the real world is very boring. The trailer gave away all the funny parts. There was way too much face hitting or slapping (you can carry a joke only so far before it gets tiring). Kim (Robin Givens) plays Mays ex-fiancée who tries to get him back when she finds out he’s running for the President. Robin overacted the role so much that she’s not even close to being funny (the only funny parts are when you hear “security”).

I enjoy a lot of the Saturday Night Live cast and how many have made it in the movie world and as much as Chris has been successful and winning several awards, I just don’t care for this movie. I do like him better as a character actor. He tries too hard and he’s just not funny in this movie. I generally don’t like politics so to sit and watch a political movie and hope it’s funny, and then it’s not, well, I just wasted a Saturday evening.

DVD Extra’s – Deleted Scenes, The Making Of, Cast, Filmmakers, Production Notes, Gallery. Nothing exciting, 3 sections just text with no music, and the gallery is made up of still pictures. With a lot of this movie looking like a music video, you think they would have added some music to the extras.
