Chapter II in Peter Jackson and Frances Walsh's vision of J.R.R Tolkien's epic trilogy. I have to admit right off that I did like "Fellowship of the Rings" better than this installment. Nonetheless, it was a breathtaking journey through Middle Earth just the same, and the New Zealand backdrop only added to the Medieval Fantasy motif, and the special effects…flawless.
However, the movie did seem to drag in some points and the battle scenes were somewhat too swift and too furious, that one could not help but fail to see some of what was going on. And I'm not one of those kinds of people that go back to see a movie again and again to see what I missed. I did that back when Star Wars first came out and I'm too old to do it again now. : ) It just seemed to all be happening in a flash, and sensory overload set in. But when all the dust finally did settle, I truly enjoyed the film, and will look forward to seeing next year's "The Return of the King".
Lastly, one portion of the film truly stood out far and above the rest, this of course would be in reference to the character of Gollum or Smeagol. In a word "Outstanding!" It was simply a stirring performance, both in the CGI effects, and actor Andy Serkis' impressive portrayal. The effects brought the character to life, and Mr. Serkis' gave him a soul. I cannot say enough about these parts of the film in which the character appeared, but I could not wait until the storyline returned to him. It was simply a moving and inspired presentation, and truly worth the price of admission all on it's own. Bravo!
