I don’t think I need to explain what this is about, because
you are either a fan that has already read the books or have seen the
movies, and if you’re not a fan, you probably won’t go see
it anyway.
I have to admit; I saw the first 2 on DVD. I wasn’t in love with
the first one, as at the time I happened to be into the “new”
Harry Potter film fascination. I didn’t understand the whole story,
as I hadn’t read the books. Now, when I saw the Two Towers, I was
hooked. Don’t know what did it, but obviously I couldn’t wait
for the Return of the King.
The cinematography was amazing in this instalment. The visual effects
were superb... however there was one part when Frodo was running into
the volcanic cave, his running was not lined up with the camera action
of the CG cave. Very fake. I was also disappointed when they didn’t
show Eowyn’s reaction to the return of Arwen. That was one of Eowyn’s
main purpose in this movie was the potential new love interest of Aragorn,
and when they didn’t show her reaction, I thought it was a very
important piece that was missed. You will notice they showed Eowyn bowing
to the King just BEFORE Arwen’s entrance.
Against Jef’s dislike for the dead army, I liked the effect of the
wide shot. I don’t feel it was a shortcut to show from this angle.
I think it was perfect to show the reality of the masses in the whole
war and to see the effect of this. We saw so much of the fighting up close
and needed a reminder of the masses. I did agree with Jef about the “many”
final scenes. The fade out’s to a new scene just kept going on and
on. I maybe was a bit upset at this only because I had to go to the washroom
for the second time during this movie and at this point wanted it to end
(only because of my bladder
My only advice if you do see this movie… do NOT drink before or
during this movie if you want to enjoy it fully. As much as I loved this
movie, I do miss the good ol’ days of 90-minute feature films that
just left you wanting a bit more. That’s a satisfied customer and
the producers should appreciate that.
