A University Professor David Gale (Kevin Spacey) is accused of
rape and convicted of murder. Two different incidences but lead to the
obvious guilt. A friend (Laura Linney) and fellow activist for the anti-death
penalty is the murder victim. It’s quite a coincidence that David
Gale should be up for the death penalty for this crime.
A reporter Bitsey Bloom (Kate Winslet) is hired to interview David in
the last remaining days before he’s executed. It’s shown in
flashback style as David recounts the events that lead up to his demise.
A twister ending that makes you judge the justice system again (as we
seem to be constantly doing). Very good story line, but what I didn’t
believe about it is the timeline in which it happened. Bitsey has only
4 days (a total of 8 hours – 2 hours per day), to piece the story
together. The timeline involved is specific and required for the outcome,
but what was unrealistic about it is that Bitsey could get so emotionally
involved in only 4 days (or 8 hours). That would take months, especially
if you’ve already had a preconceived notion of what happened before
meeting David Gale. If all crimes could be solved in such a short period
of time, than we wouldn’t have a back log of court dates and crime
investigators would have a lot more vacation time on their hands.
Overall, this is an excellent movie and timeline aside, this movie makes
you think about the “what if” and the justice system (once
again).
