Honestly I had no real interest in seeing this movie, but after finding
out that it had been in theaters for 26 weeks, I had to admit I was little
bit more than curious. It turned out to be a nice little light-hearted
comedy. Director Joel Zwick did a fine job with Writer/Lead Actress Nia
Vardalos' classic tale of two people trying to get married from different
ethnic backgrounds, and unfortunately for them they must deal with getting
the family's approval first. Nothing really more to say, other than it
was a cute and harmless film and you wouldn't be wasting your money going
to see it. The acting was fine, the story a good one. And I have to admit
that I did laugh out loud on an occasion, which is rare for me when seeing
a supposed comedy. : )
After the film though, I did feel a longing that I wished I was from a
more singular family background steeped with tradition, other than the
mixed breed that I am, with German, English, Irish, and Native American
thrown in there for good measure. They just seemed to be tighter knitted,
and not to mention have a whole lot of fun at family gatherings. : ) But
this is a movie, and I am still very proud of my mixed heritage. : ) Sadly
the movie did remind of something my Grandmother had said to me when I
mentioned my non-denominational girlfriend to her from time past. "You
just find yourself a nice Catholic girl." Okay? Whatever. You can't
help falling in love with whom you fall, and that's the way it should
be. This was the important message I got from the film. And by the by,
back to present time, my wife isn't catholic. : )
Lastly, coming from a Health & Safety oriented work background, I
would neither condone nor recommend anyone using Windex ® as a topical
medication. : )
