Okay the best way for me to describe this film would be to steal
a quote from another one. Of course.
The Set up: The late great Chris Farley in the film "Tommy Boy".
The Scene: Moments before David Spade's vehicle gets totally annihilated
by the "not-quite-as-dead-as-they-may-had-previously-thought"
deer that just woke up in the backseat of his car. Mayhem ensues, the
automobile; destroyed, and then as quickly as it begins, the deer quietly,
calmly trots away. The comedic duo are left standing stunned in the street
not half believing what the have just witnessed. Then slowly a smile develops
across Farley's face, and he declares, "That…was…Aaaawsome!"
This was my similar expressed emotion after seeing "The Matrix: Reloaded".
First I must admit I hadn't expected much from the movie. I thought it
was going to be liken to "Stars Wars: The Empire Strikes Back".
You know kind of a filler story between "Star Wars" and "Star
Wars: Return of the Jedi". Plus the fact that there was far too much
in the way of advertising for the film, it seemed every time I turned
around it was "Matrix" this and "Matrix" that. Also,
if you figure that the original film in the series only had one-30 second
ad during the Super Bowl, and that was it, and was extremely successful
despite the obvious lack of commercial airtime thereafter. So, why say
anything other than "The Matrix: Reloaded" 5-15-03? The movie
in all respects should sell itself. So the caution flags went up, and
I was asking myself, "Why the hard sell?" And with this in mind,
I did go into the theater with some trepidation.
But, in spite of my reservations, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I won't
say much more about the movie or the contents there within as not to ruin
it for anyone else, but I will go as far to say that you should expect
to think about this one. It does raise many questions that I'm sure will
be answered in the final installment in November. But, it's not your run
of the mill brainless mind candy Sci-fi movie that Hollywood typically
spits out. And I will go as far to say that I actually liked this movie
more than the original. And since you really don't know me, that's saying
quite the bit, beings that "The Matrix" is my favorite Science
Fiction film of all time. That of course does not mean that this movie
is now my new favorite. And that is more than just for the obvious reason
that without the first, the second wouldn't make much sense.
Enjoy…
