Um…ah…hmm?
In a word, "Creepy". But before that, there is quite the interesting
tale of a sheltered and very shy girl with a not so unusual eye affliction
(which can be corrected over time). Her mother; smothering and a touch
daft in the head, and the dad, well the father might as well been non-existent.
And of course it doesn't take much in childhood to make you into an outcast,
and the other children make it near if not completely impossible to get
back in. Naturally, Mom's endearing advise for all this is "If you
don't have any friends then make one.", then proceeded to give her
daughter one of her favorite homemade dolls from her own youth, and naturally
May isn't allowed to play with it. Why you ask? Because it has to stay
in it's glass showcase, cause it's just oh so precious. "Uh…thanks
for the glass box Mom, cause this will truly help in the development of
my social interaction skills later on in life."
It's funny and it's not.
I think that's why I liked this film and stood transfixed all the way
to the end. Because we've all known or do know someone like this, people
that don't fit by others definition, or even perhaps been or are one.
(In my case, May reminded me of an ex-stalker-girlfriend I had a long
time ago. But in all
seriousness it's very easy to ridicule someone, but much harder to try
to understand them. And I think that what this movie shows…a certain
fragility in us all. Lessons that make us who we are, and why we do the
things we do. A chilling and bizarre little ride through the freak show,
but definite food for future thought…hopefully.
