A wonderful little slice of life story with a taste of bitter
from Spain. The premise is simple; friends that whom have all made their
living at the same company now find themselves without a job or prospects
since the plant closed. It would have to make one feel somewhat worthless,
especially since this may be the only job they have ever had since they
first started working, and when the only thing you know is now gone, you
have to search for a new road or fall by the wayside. Certain that the
characters in this movie are not unique from the realm of reality, and
I felt a kind of kinship with them, common bonds that binds us kind of
stuff.
The wonderful thing about "Slice of Life" films as I like to
call them, is that they pick up in the middle of the story. There's no
real beginning, the story is simple to understand, and it really never
seems to have an end. After a certain amount of time or lack of money
the director, in this case, Fernando León de Aranda, just decides
it a good place to say goodbye. Good guys can win or lose, and there's
no nice neat little packages wrapped up with a big shiny bow…kind
of like life.
I truly liked this movie. The characters and their ways of dealing with
their loss were both amusing and at times very sad. One standout within
the cast was from Javier Bardem, whom played the part of "Carlos
Santamaria" or 'Santa'. I liked his style in the film, and his performance
was a treasure to watch. Bravo.
