Plain and simply: a mesmerizing psychological thriller. I could say a lot about this movie, but I wouldn't want to spoil a bit of it for anyone. If I were to sum it up in a word though, that word would have be to "Wow!". It has been quite the while that I had seen a movie that I can actually say that I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. I will say one thing though, in reference to the last 20 minutes of the movie, I have not been this transfixed in a movie since the first 20 minutes of Steven Spielberg's "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN". Writer/Director Mark Romanek offers up an interesting portrait of a delusional semi-psychotic loner with an understandably wonderful but somewhat misguided and tortured soul. Robin Williams' portrayal as said character Sy Parrish was flawless. (If he doesn't not win Best Actor for this one there is a serious defect in the system, but that goes without saying.) Regardless, Robin Williams' performance was truly unbelievable and remarkable, and it's still kind of hard to imagine that this is the same guy from "MORK & MINDY" fame. : )
The only downfall in the movie that has nothing really to do with the movie, but would be more of a malfunction in my own psyche, in the character of Bill Owens played by Gary Cole (in which he played very well) for some unexplained reason, every time he spoke, I kept hearing Bill Lumbergh's (from Mike Judge's "OFFICE SPACE") voice coming out, "Yeah, that'd be great." : ) But, I guess we've all got issues, don't we? : )
