A coming of age story about a boy dropped off, by his irresponsible
single mother, for the summer with his great uncles whom he’s never
met. The mother has a plan for Walter to get close to his uncles so he
can find out where they stashed a load of money that apparently they are
supposed to have. What happens is a bond between Walter and Garth and
Hub. Cranky old men that are happy being left alone, shooting whatever
gets in their way. I’ll tell ya, it sure was hard being a salesman
in those days Garth
tells stories to Walter about their early heroic days (which is told in
flashback style with elaborate period sets). And we can’t forget
the “lion” that enters the picture.
Nice family story about bonding with people of an earlier generation and
the wisdom that is passed on. These men like to live life on the edge
and Walter has to bring them back to reality (or does he). Whether you
believe the stories told or not, as Hub says, some men are meant to believe
things that make them feel good.
We can’t forget the variety of pets in this family, and also the
relatives who act like animals, as they are only interested in the money.
This is a light-hearted comedy with some good laughs and life lessons.
Good for all ages. Good chemistry between all, especially Garth (Caine)
and Hub (Duvall). I liked seeing Robert in a comedic role.
There is no body count (only fish count), just good ol’ bonding
and humour.
