A couple of days prior to seeing this film my wife and I took a little overnight jaunt to Atlantic City. We drop our daughter off at her Grandmother's for a sleepover, and off we went. Not something we would ordinarily do, but it was part of a birthday present for my wife, so special occasion protocol is allowed. : ) Anyway, we get down to the hotel/casino, check in, and go up to the room to drop off our bag. When I made the reservation I had asked for an ocean view room, but being that the room was comped (free), they only said that they would see what they could do. But, when we get up to the twelfth floor and finally figure out the magnetic key thing to the door, and I go to open the blind and there they are…waves! But wait, there's another curtain on the side? Open, and boardwalk…not only an ocean view, but also a corner room to boot! Double Sweet! Shortly afterwards we head down to the casino, where my wife proceeds to hit on one of the slot machines for $400 dollars, and I of course pretty much break even. I could go on and on, but to make a long story short, it was a wonderful eventful evening and well worth the trip down, and we had a great time.
But, you're probably asking yourself what does this have to do with the movie "Spun"? Nothing. It's just that writing a movie review and talking about a date with my wife instead makes more sense than this film did. I could not understand the point of this movie. I mean talk about a cornucopia of other movies mixed together, where should I start? I don't know…how about…"Go"…"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"…"Pink Floyd's: The Wall"…"Dazed and Confused"…the list could go on and on. I could even throw in "Dude's Where's my Car?" for good measure, it wouldn't make any difference.
I wanted to see this movie because I thought it had an extremely intriguing collection of actors for a cast, and the only thing that made sense about the film was having Mickey Rourke in it. He's weird enough in everything else that this film was perfect for him. (Not to say bad things about all of his previous works because there are some real priceless ones in there, not many…but some.) As for everyone else…I have no idea.
I understood the subject matter (being one of those close to the edge type of people way back in my younger years), but what I couldn't figure out was…is this supposed to be a comedy? Unfortunately, I didn't see the humor in it, nor the point for that matter. What a terrible waste of talent in this film, and not to mention a tragic waste of my money spent to go see it. Although the theatre we went to had one of those candy bin things where you could buy sweets by the lb…and the Whoppers® almost put me into a diabetic coma they were so good, but other than that…this was possibly could be the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life, and I've seen some real bad ones.
Thank you…and oh yeah…Have a nice day… : )
