Ok, I’ll admit it. Maybe I was in a good mood for this
movie, and am being generous in giving it a green light. Were there problems
with the storyline? Yes. Were there problems in continuity? Yes. But,
ya know, when I left the theatre, I felt like I had been entertained with
a good action film.
Storyline: We meet up with a much older John Conner (Nick
Stahl), from the last time we saw him as a rebellious teen. John appears
to be in his early 20’s. He’s kind of a rebel on the run,
as he says “Living off the grid”, no permanent address, no
phone, etc… He been haunted by thoughts that even though in “T2”
they supposedly averted “judgment day” he has a nagging feeling
that something big is still going to happen. In walks the new “Terminator”
or I should say “Termanatrix” (Kristanna Loken). She is a
new model called the “T-X” (I wonder if this was a nod to
apple computer’s new operating system called “OS X”?).
And like in the second terminator movie, Arnold is sent back in time,
yet again, to protect John Conner from the new T-X.
Does the storyline seem familiar? It is. It was very much like the second
Terminator, but with some new twists. As I mentioned I might be generous
in giving T3 a green light. But I’m trying to keep it all in the
frame of mind, that this is a typical summer action adventure movie. The
storyline, even though it has some flaws, I think was something they did
spend a little time on. I liked some of the plot lines, and some of the
twists, that set it apart from the other terminator movies. Granted, you
pretty much have to throw out any sort of thinking regarding the time-travel
aspect. The first movie really messed up the time-travel logic, and since
then, you just have to “accept” that it doesn’t make
sense logically, and that it’s just a device for the plot.
The effects were cool. Nothing really ground breaking, but still nice
to look at. Nothing too over-the-top (as a lot of movies are falling into
now-a-days). A car chase scene had some interesting things in it, that
I’d never seen before too. Was it totally believable? No. But it
was fun to watch.
The new T-X was nice to look at too! Kristanna brought a super sexy-ness
to a role that blends the male destruction in a female body - a sort of
Yin and Yang.
Nick Stahl did a decent job playing the role of John Conner. Claire Danes
also did a good job playing Kate Brewster. And Arnold, I gotta say…
He’s still got it for an action adventure hero. I had my doubts.
He’s in his mid-50s now, and I hear he may be running for public
office soon, so I had a hard time picturing him as the tough Terminator
from about 12 years ago!
I almost rented the second Terminator before seeing this 3rd installment,
but ya know, I really don’t think it mattered. They hinted at the
storyline enough to refresh my memory. I wasn’t caught up in the
details of the time-travel, and just enjoyed the ride.
So if you’re in the mood for a good action adventure summer blockbuster,
give Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines a chance. Don’t try to over
analyze it like the Matrix. Just enjoy the car chases, and explosions
for what they are.
