Watch the video and you die? Hmmm...I've seen movies that I wished I was dead instead of watching...Does that count? : ) But seriously...Screenplay Writer Ehren Kruger and Director Gore Verbinski offer us an Americanize adaptation of the 1989 novel from writer Kôji Suzuki's "Ringu" or perhaps just a remake of the Japanese movie made in 1998 of the same name. Either way, at least Hollywood is expanding their horizons of remaking past films to overseas, but I haven't seen the 98' film, so I shouldn't really much complain. : )
I hadn't really intended to see this movie for several reasons. Foremost being that it seems Hollywood cannot make a halfway decent horror film anymore. Although I thought effects in "13 Ghosts" were nonetheless disturbing (in a good way : ), and the concept of "Scream" was at least original. And there was of course "The Blair Witch Project" and it doesn't count cause that was an independent film, and the normal rules of Hollywood don't apply. : ) But, from the first 10 minutes of "The Ring" I was hooked. You have to understand that I am a jaded fan of the genre from way back, and I surprised myself that became so enthralled with this movie. It was straightforward in its storyline, watch the video and you will die in a week's time. But with that in mind, I now had to see the deadly video.
In and of itself, the short film within the film became more of the main character of the movie than just an effect or prop, and managed to take on a mystifying life of it's own. With simple and stark captivating imagery reminiscent of a Nine Inch Nails video, it draws you in and won't let go. I had to know more, and there I sat transfixed accepting the ride that was offered me, not questioning the route, nor caring as to what was my intended destination. All I wanted to know was what was going to happen when the week's time clock finally expired… And believe me, I was not disappointed in the least when it had. : )
Lastly, I truly enjoyed this film, and commend all that were involved in its production, especially whomever made the video that the movie revolves around. Bravo and well done!
My only question is this; what happens at the end of my week after seeing "The Ring"? : ) Well hopefully til next time…
