A gritty little story about
the stringent rules of tradition with the shining soul of an angel, and
that light would come by way of Keisha Castle-Hughes. Keisha portrays
"Pai" the unfortunately individual set with the task of perhaps
reviving a dying legend or maybe even inadvertently destroying it. She
is captivating and powerful in her performance. Bravo.
Yet, the film itself isn't all too interesting. I mean I understand that
this is a "Slice of Life" story from the far away land of New
Zealand. A modern day tribe is trying to keep a fable alive in hopes of
restoring prosperity to the clan. But it's difficult to join the spirit
of the rally when no one really seems to care except the eldest chief,
and which of course isn't one of the nicest guys on the island, but naturally
is the most respected. On the other hand I would imagine this is part
of the movies charm. When you have little to hold on to, the trust in
tradition may be the only thing you have left. And in that respect is
what gives the film it's charm…Hope, and remaining true to your
beliefs, even if those beliefs may need to change…
