Just before the movie started I reminded myself that this is only a comic book movie, and to try not to be too judgmental.

Storyline: Going with Hollywood’s new genre of prequels, this movie is about the beginning of Batman’s rise to superhero-dom. We see how it all started when he was just a little boy, and then his wandering phase, and his then ninja training, to his eventual return to Gotham for some payback.

Overall I enjoyed the movie. It was entertaining and a good comic book movie. Perhaps my biggest complaint was that it is about 20-30 minutes too long. I was really enjoying the beginning storyline. But then once things started getting rolling, and Batman was doing what he does best in Gotham, I started losing interest. The fight scenes were too choppy and quick cut. Something I’ve complained about in other films. I guess this is just personal preference, some like their fight scenes like this, others like it so you can see who is punching who. Which leads me to the next point… many of the scenes were too dark. I don’t mean dark as in brooding, but dark due to lack of light. Sure, you have a guy dressed in a black suit, at night, but still it could have been better lit.

I did not understand one key part to the beginning story (I’ll have to ask Lyn, as he’s the king of all Batman things), Why was he in this sort of Tibetan prison? Did he commit a crime? And how did he get out? It certainly wasn’t for good behavior.

Well, I won’t bash the film up too much. There were definitely parts that I did like. The whole psychotropic drug hallucination scenes were amazing! The character “Scarecrow” was believable, and I wish they focused a little more on this character. The Batmobile was amazing! But It did seem a little out of place, the movie was supposed to be a prequel, so I can’t see anyone going from this tank like Batmobile back to a car. But this is nitpicky. Michael Caine was great as Alfred as well. I found it amazing how this guy doesn’t seem to age one bit.

All in all a decent comic book movie, and ten times better than any of the other batman movies.
